Addiction

What are substance use disorders and addictions?

Substance use disorders are defined by several criteria. The most simple way to know whether you might need help with substance use is whether it is causing a problem in your life. These are some of the signs of substance use disorders:

  • Wanting to stop or cut down your use of a substance, but having difficulty doing so

  • Cravings to use the substance

  • Using larger amounts of the substance that you’re intending to

  • Neglecting other parts of your life (e.g. family, work, school, friends) because of the substance

  • Continuing to use the substance even if its causing relationship problems

  • Using the substance even when it puts you in danger (e.g. before driving)

Substance use disorders indicate that you use some kind of substance (e.g. alcohol, cannabis, cocaine, meth, etc.). However, some people might struggle with addictions to other things that don’t involve any kind of substance. This could include addictions to gambling, food (e.g. binge eating), sex, gaming, or internet use. These are considered behavioral addictions.
